I’ve Got A Pretty Pink Pot And You’d Look Really Good Standing Beside It

A$3,200.00

This piece draws inspiration from the lyrics and film clip of Laurie Anderson’s 1988 song ‘Beautiful Red Dress’.

The song is a sardonic commentary on gender inequality where Anderson switches between channeling male bravado, and highlighting derogatory feminine stereotypes.

I was drawn to this song as it aligns with my approach to creating my signature typographic vessels, where the appearance of the piece is decorative, joyful and pretty, but there is a deeper message of feminine strength and patriarchial protest to be found if desired.

In the film clip for ‘Beautiful Red Dress’ Anderson uses a colour palette consisting of mostly red, black and white.

In my own work I utilise the colour pink the the same way that Anderson has used red here, as unapologetic celebration of womanhood.

The motifs around the body of the vessel are a combination of references to lyrics within the song, and imagery I use regularly in my work to represent patriarchal interpretations of femininity.

The title itself references Anderson’s lyric ‘I’ve got a beautiful red dress and you’d look really good standing beside it.’
